Different Wines & Vineyards - Different types of Wine Labels

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 8:58 am
by Sharon Thorley

Many winemakers prefer a personalize label telling the story behind the wine, behind the vineyard, behind the winemaker. Each wine can have a distinct label to reflect slight differences in blend, preparation, aging and packaging even for the same original type of grape.

This is why each label for each wine producer can be considered personalized wine bottle labels. You can go even further by having artwork specifically done for the labels, the vintage; even the type of wine may have a separate type of artwork, or a different artist. This label is more than just something to tell you what kind of wine it is, what the warnings about drinking wine are, and what year it was created. These labels also can tell you the history of the people and the place that created it.

Classic labels for wine might have a picture of the vineyard used when it first started creating the wine. The picture may include just the vineyard or its warehouses or barrels or the owner’s home. The label may have also been commissioned by the creator to be designed by artists or painters.

There are plenty of different types of wine labels. Some are small, some are large, and some go all around the bottle in a band while still others may cover the majority of the bottle. It all depends on where the wine is coming from, what type of wine, the age of the vintage, and the age of the vineyard and the personalized preferences of the owners of the vineyard.

There are many things to consider when looking at personalized wine bottle labels. The first thing is to look at the size. Older vintages are more likely to have smaller labels rather than labels that cover the entire bottle. This is because older vineyards are less likely to change from styles that are more traditional, it does not however mean that they do not change label sizes.

Once you have looked at size look at the type of designs that are one the personalized wine bottle labels. This will tell you how progressive or how new the vineyard is. Modern art is going to indicate for the most part a newer vineyard. In addition, if the wine labels change every single vintage for every different wine then chances are it is a new vintage.

Older and more traditional art tends to be found more on older vintages or vineyards which are steeped in tradition. When looking at wine bottle labels, you will find that all bottles are customized based on vintage and the vineyard producing the wine. They might also change according to type of wine.

You want to learn about wine? Then you have to learn first what are the things written on the wine labels. Wine labels contain information on the vineyard, vintage and kinds of wines.

However there are only a few people who are using green beans maybe because it is a bit much work to prepare them. Prior to that you have to grind and roast them first before you are able to in reality be able to drink. This isn’t great with people who are so used to instant mixes.

Store Fresh Coffee Beans

The shelf life of a roasted whole bean is much better than those that aren’t roasted. A roasted whole bean can last for about 1 to 2 weeks. It is nevertheless crucial to keep fresh coffee beans in standard room temperature and be locked in an air-tight containers or canister. If it is possible, use glass canisters and keep off using plastic ones as the flavor perhaps compromised in some manner by the plastic material.

Metal containers should not be used. What you have to remember though is obly to use dark-colored glass as these beans shouldn’t be exposed to light in any way. Ceramic ones are another good alternatives.

Anyway technique to properly store your coffee is every two to three days, open the canister to expel the gas that is brought on by the roasted beans. One option to eradicate the problem of gas is to utilize valve bags, which permit the carbon dioxide to escape. But one disfavor is that these bags can be very expensive and rather rare.

If let’s say your whole bean coffee isn’t consumed in two weeks, then it is important to store the coffee in the refrigerator and freeze them. When you properly store your coffee like this, the coffee beans can last for a month or two. Just cover the beans with a plastic wrap. If you want to use the beans, just grind them frozen. Once thawed, you can’t use them again.

Some of the Most Flavorsome Mexican Spices

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 9:08 pm
by KC Kudra

Nearly all-Mexican recipes contain Mexican spices. Some spices, such as garlic and garlic powder, can be found anywhere but others are more exotic. Epazote is quite a rare spice and flavors foods such as beans. Also known, as “Mexican tea” epazote should be consumed sparingly because large amounts can be toxic when eaten by humans. It is strong but also soothes digestive pains caused by overindulgence in beans! Different spices are used in different dishes. For instance, spices for Mexican refried beans would differ from spices for beef burritos.

Chile powder is a popular spice in Mexican foods. It is used to add flavor to vegetables, and meats. Another Chile powder that is popular is Chipotle. It is made from Jalapenos that have been dried and smoked. The flavor is one of a kind and goes well with many dishes. It is gaining popularity outside of Mexico. One other type of chili pepper is Ancho. It is different from the other peppers because it has a sweet flavor similar to dried fruit.

Cumin, coriander, and oregano are very popular Mexican spices. Tomato dishes are often improved with some earthy oregano. Coriander is spicy and goes well with many recipes. Cumin, which takes three or four months to grow, has a very unique taste. It is a dry seed from the cuminum cyminum herb, which is a member of the parsley family. This spice is used to make chili powder and a variety of curry powders. You can also make a tea called “cumin cider” from this spice. Cumin has been used in cookery for hundreds of years throughout Mexico.

Mexican spices are often blended to give optimum recipe results. Recado rojo is a blend, popular in Mexico now but originally used in Mayan times. This spice mixture contains annatto seeds, which make it red. When you add recado rojo to your recipe, the resulting food will be red too. Cinnamon, clove, cumin, garlic, and oregano are just some of the ingredients in recajo rojo. It is widely used in the Yucatan area but you can make it yourself at home quite easily.

The shrub, which provides the annatto seeds, is called achiote. This is grown in Southeast Asia and was discovered by the Spanish in the 1800s. The achiote fruit cannot be eaten but the seeds are widely used. They were used by the American Indians to make body paint. Part of the achiote shrub can be used to make remedies for burns and headaches.

If you want to try these spices from your home, they are available at major grocery stores. You can even make your own blend of Mexican spices. Gather a few of the mentioned spices in this article, along with paprika and salt, and blend them together for a sensational burst of flavor. This is a great blend of chilies. It can be added to foods that are baked, broiled and barbequed. It is perfect on chicken and pork. It is an excellent addition for your next barbeque. Let the grilling begin!

The Tastiest Sweet Treats from Mexico

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 8:01 pm
by KC Kudra

Mexico is a hot country and sometimes Mexicans just want to cool off. They have many cool snacks to choose from, including ice cream sandwiches and popsicles. Many Mexican dessert recipes include tropical fruits, chocolate, or cinnamon. There are men selling these cool treats up and down the Mexican streets, a bit like ice cream trucks in the summer in the United States.

Paletas - The Refreshing Mexican Popsicle

Paletas means “little shovels” in Spanish and these tasty popsicles can be bought in Mexican grocery stores. Their shapes are normal but their flavors are different from American popsicles. Some are mainly ice with tart flavors and others are milk-based with tropical fruits. You can even get a chili and cucumber flavored paleta.

The chili one is a bit spicy, so pepper lovers would enjoy this flavor. Paletas are easy to make at home and carry little fat. If you would prefer to buy them, paletas are sold at many street vendors in Hispanic neighborhoods. A California-based company named Palapa Azul makes paletas to sell to a much wider market, not just for Hispanics. You might even be able to purchase paletas at Wal-Mart!

Mexican Fried Ice Cream - Yes Fried

Mexican fried ice cream is another mouth-watering treat. It is somewhat Americanized. You can find fried ice cream at Mexican restaurants in the United States and also at festivals. The ice cream used is more frozen than majority of ice creams. The ball of ice cream is rolled with different items such as cookie crumbs and then cooked in the deep fryer at a very low temperature. This allows the ice cream not to melt. Once it is fried, toppings can be added. Cinnamon is a common topping. Fried ice cream has become so common that it is also served in Chinese and Japanese restaurants. They add different flavors to the ice cream. You might find it green tea flavored.

Mexican Ice Cream with Cajeta Sweetened Caramelized Milk

If in the mood for just regular vanilla ice cream, cajeta would be a great topping. Cajeta is a Mexican confection of syrup most commonly made from caramelized milk that is sweetened. The syrup is made by the sweetened liquid being cooked slowly and breaking down until it is very thick. Some people use different liquids instead of sweetened milk.

Cajeta can be made with goat’s milk, cow’s milk, or juice. It has different names in different Mexican neighborhoods, including crema de cajeta, dulce de leche, and leche quemada. Cajeta is great served on ice cream. The Hershey Company makes its own cajeta to please the Mexican population and Mexican food aficionados. If the day is warm and you want to cool off, cajeta on vanilla ice cream is sure to do the job.

These cold treats are quite straightforward to make yourself, if you want to have a go. You could research some different techniques and flavors and see what the results are like. If you have kids, it is a lot of fun for them to help you in the kitchen with your Mexican fried ice cream, paletas, or cajeta recipe and, of course, they will love the finished products. Cool Mexican sweet snacks are perfect on a hot day or on any other day of the year.

How To Prevent Hyperglycemia With A Diabetic Diet

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 5:55 pm
by Delynda Lardone

Maintaining a normal sugar level for diabetics is a very important part of their lives. They must make sure that the level of their blood sugar remains steady and within their intended range by consistently testing their blood. But, if a diabetic chooses not to monitor the foods he eats through his diabetic diet, he can end up with a very high blood sugar level.

If the diabetic lets her blood sugar levels get too high over an extended period of time, she can wind up developing what doctors call hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia can cause some very serious health problems, but this condition can be easily avoided by learning just what causes this condition so these causes can be avoided.

The meaning of hyperglycemia is simply a person who eats way too much sugar which causes their sugar levels to build up too high within their blood. This occurs when diabetics stray from their diabetic diet and eat the wrong foods. The sugar builds up differently in diabetics depending on which type of diabetes you have. Type 1 diabetics can not produce any insulin that the body needs so it can process the sugar. Type 2 diabetics can not produce enough insulin to handle the large amounts of sugar.

How our bodies process the sugar is the key to all diabetic conditions. The sugar first enters our bodies through the groceries we eat and makes its way into our blood stream. The pancreas will then start producing and releasing the insulin that is needed so it can carry that sugar into our cells to create energy.

This same process happens in diabetics but with one main difference. If they consume too many foods that contain sugar, the excess sugar will remain in the bloodstream as the body will only use what it needs. This excess sugar will then start building up in the blood which results in hyperglycemia.

Letting this excess sugar build up over a long stretch of time is very dangerous because it will damage your major organs that you need to live. It will start off by harming your blood vessels and then will work its way to damaging your heart vessel, eyes, nerves, and kidneys.

Many diabetics don’t worry about hyperglycemia because they can not see the effects at the moment. This is because it is a condition that affects people later in life. Diabetics will only see the damaging consequences when they are older as it does not appear in teens and children .

Hyperglycemia is a serious condition that diabetics should start to consider when they are maintaining a diabetic diet. Straying from a diabetic diet and eating the wrong foods can cause some very health serious problems that deal with their heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes. Although children and teens can not get this, diabetics need to start monitoring what they eat so they do not get it when they are older.

Cooking Fish like a Professional Chef

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 5:08 pm
by KC Kudra

There are plenty of different ways of cooking fish and it is fun to try different methods. Depending on whether you are using a whole fish, steaks of fillets, you might like to try braising, deep or shallow frying, steaming or even cooking the fish on a wood fish board. Stuffed fish tastes delicious and adds texture. Round fish are the best for stuffing because the body cavity is larger. Most stuffing is made from breadcrumbs, which expand when they cook, so do not use too much. If you are using sea bass, a parsley and walnut pesto makes a great stuffing. If you have fillets, you can sandwich them with stuffing or roll them, then oven-bake them.

Methods of Fish Cooking

Poaching and steaming are healthy, easy ways to cook fish. To poach your fish, you add cream or another thickener, herbs and seasoning. You can use the juice to make a sauce for the fish. For steaming, you place the fish in a steamer over boiling water and put a tight-fitting lid over it.

Oven baking and roasting are suitable for whole fish or fillets. You place the fish in an ovenproof dish and add herbs, seasoning, oil or butter and white wine. If you want very tender flesh, you can cook your fish “en papillote”, which means you put the fish in sealed paper or foil, so it will cook in its own steam. You might like to add lemon or limejuice, fresh herbs and white wine to the fish before sealing the parcel and cooking it. If you would like to braise your fish, you need to put it on top of sauted vegetables in an ovenproof dish, add some white wine and bouillon, and cook for about 20 minutes, with a tight-fitting lid in place.

Grilling is a good way of cooking small whole fish or fillets. If you are using whole fish, slash the skin on both sides a few times and brush with melted butter or olive oil. Baste the fish during cooking and turn it halfway through. You might like to wrap the fish in foil with olive oil, herbs, and lemon juice before placing it on the grill.

You do not have to heat the fish in order to cook it. An example is Ceviche, where white fish (usually snapper) is mixed with limejuice, herbs, and chili. The acidic citrus juice cooks the fish. Scallops, flounder, and sole also suit this cooking method.

Wood Board for Cooking Fish

Most types of wood are suitable for cooking fish, as long as the board is pest-free and untreated. You need to soak the wood before using it. Soak the wood for at least an hour, until it is totally waterlogged. This ensures it is going to give off enough steam to cook the fish.

Cedar is the most common wood but you can also use oak, maple, alder, apple, or cherry. You can buy a cooking quality wood fish board from specialty food stores or online. A wood fish board lasts for one use.

To stop the fish sticking to the board, brush the fish with oil first on one side. You will not need to flip the fish during cooking because it cooks indirectly. Season the fish and place it on the fish board, which you then put on the grill. Make sure you are using a low fire so as not to ignite the board and baste the fish during cooking with anything non-flammable.

Cooking fish on a wood fish board is an excellent way of cooking. The wood smolders, which creates the smoke to flavor your fish. What’s more, there is no washing up to be done afterwards!
