Monday 11 August 2008 @ 10:47 pm
by Judy Turner

We could save a fortune each month if we didn’t need to buy groceries. Unfortunately, that is not an option. Well all need to eat. Therefore, shopping for food is a necessity. While there isn’t a whole lot that we can do to avoid this expense there is plenty that we can do to save money every time we shop.

Here are just a few tips to help you get started on your grocery shopping budget.

1) Plan your meals in advance: Create a weekly or even monthly menu. Make a list and check your fridge and pantry for items that you already have. This will cut down on unnecessary purchases.

2) Stay organized: Organizing your pantry and checking expiration dates will help determine what you need to stock up on.

3) Stick to your list: Be sure everything you need is on your list and stick to it. The only exception to this is if you find an unadvertised sale for items that you normally use.

4) Clip coupons: Combining grocery coupons with weekly sales can make a huge difference in your grocery bill. Watch the prices though because sometimes you will find another brand cheaper even without a coupon.

5) Go meatless once in a while: One or two meatless dishes a week not only saves money, but is a healthy way to get in more vegetables.

6) Buy in bulk: Stock up on big packs of meat and poultry and divide into meal size portions to freeze.

7) Use up your leftovers: When cooking dinner try to plan ahead how you can be creative with the leftovers the next day.

8) Cook for a month: Set aside one Saturday a month and prepare all your meals for that month. You can cook them or just prepare them for cooking. Package them in freezer bags or air tight containers and store them in the freezer. This will save you money as well as much of your valuable time.

Follow these simple guidelines and you are sure to save big bucks on your grocery budget. You will also see that you don’t seem to miss those unnecessary luxuries as much as you expected to.

Knowing How To Say Thank You With Chocolate Truffles

Sunday 10 August 2008 @ 12:46 pm
by Fredrick Simmons

For many years, chocolate truffles have been the perfect choice for all events. Any special event, from holidays to weddings to birthdays, is a welcome event to give and receive these presents and quite a few individuals across the world has given or received chocolatess at some point in the past. The industry has become a profitable giant and income continue to climb each year.

Many individuals have a favourite type of chocolate truffles because each brand’s product tastes somehow different. This is due to the special formulas that the companies use to craft their different selections. Because of the quantity of different ingredients that can be added to the base cocoa to craft the many different flavors available, there are an unlimited number of formulations that can be used to craft a unique product to sell to consumers. If an individual indicates a preference for a certain type of chocolate truffles, that should be the kinds that is given to them. There is always a reason that an individual may like one variety over another and they may not enjoy the flavor of a different variety. To be certain that the recipient gets the greatest pleasure out of the gift, it should be a variety that they enjoy.

If the type of Belgian chocolate that the individual likes is unknown, then the person should choose a brand that they themselves like. People who share a lot of similar interests can often have like tastes as well. While this is not always a fool-proof method of choosing the right flavor, more often than not the individual is satisfied with the choice and the thought that went into selecting the present.

The number of stores that have chocolate truffles available is staggering to reflect on. A individual can purchase some type of these items at almost any store that sells food, gifts, or specializes in confections. Some stores have very extensive product lines that take up huge areas of their stores, while other stores have a limited selection located on several shelves to choose from.

One of the most popular places to purchase chocolate truffles is stores that only sell sweet items such as chocolates and candies. These stores can generally be found in large shopping malls and small stand alone stores in larger commercial areas. The selection available at these stores are generally more expensive than those available in other stores, but the quality is often higher than what is carried at other stores.

Some of the stores that specialize in items such as chocolate truffles are branded with a single candy maker’s brand. These stores only offer the varieties that were created in the company’s shop and will often have an extensive selection of different flavors because that is what the organization focuses on. All of the products available at these stores may have been created using the same chocolate formulation, making the texture of the chocolate consistent for every one of the items.

Another location where many individuals choose to buy chocolate truffles is mass merchandise stores. These stores will typically have a limited choice of items varying from fair to outstanding. Many of the individuals that choose to buy their products here enjoy the fact that they have a number of different products available covering a wide fee range and the individual can select which one has the quality and price that matches their needs.

Another reason why many people decide to obtain their Belgian chocolate from mass merchandisers is because it allows them to compare several other brands at one time, compared to the single brands offered at most stand alone stores. This allows them to choose brands that they have never eaten before and experience them for an affordable price. A large number of people reveal their favourite variety by sampling the different varieties available at mass merchandisers.

There are also numerous companies that will let consumers to purchase Belgian chocolate by mail, telephone, or online. Companies that sell their inventories in this way typically have a large and loyal customer base that selects their products over other similar items. Using these stores is very easy when buying gifts for other persons because several gifts can be sent to multiple recipients with the push of a button.

How To Prevent Hyperglycemia With A Diabetic Diet

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 5:55 pm
by Delynda Lardone

Maintaining a normal sugar level for diabetics is a very important part of their lives. They must make sure that the level of their blood sugar remains steady and within their intended range by consistently testing their blood. But, if a diabetic chooses not to monitor the foods he eats through his diabetic diet, he can end up with a very high blood sugar level.

If the diabetic lets her blood sugar levels get too high over an extended period of time, she can wind up developing what doctors call hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia can cause some very serious health problems, but this condition can be easily avoided by learning just what causes this condition so these causes can be avoided.

The meaning of hyperglycemia is simply a person who eats way too much sugar which causes their sugar levels to build up too high within their blood. This occurs when diabetics stray from their diabetic diet and eat the wrong foods. The sugar builds up differently in diabetics depending on which type of diabetes you have. Type 1 diabetics can not produce any insulin that the body needs so it can process the sugar. Type 2 diabetics can not produce enough insulin to handle the large amounts of sugar.

How our bodies process the sugar is the key to all diabetic conditions. The sugar first enters our bodies through the groceries we eat and makes its way into our blood stream. The pancreas will then start producing and releasing the insulin that is needed so it can carry that sugar into our cells to create energy.

This same process happens in diabetics but with one main difference. If they consume too many foods that contain sugar, the excess sugar will remain in the bloodstream as the body will only use what it needs. This excess sugar will then start building up in the blood which results in hyperglycemia.

Letting this excess sugar build up over a long stretch of time is very dangerous because it will damage your major organs that you need to live. It will start off by harming your blood vessels and then will work its way to damaging your heart vessel, eyes, nerves, and kidneys.

Many diabetics don’t worry about hyperglycemia because they can not see the effects at the moment. This is because it is a condition that affects people later in life. Diabetics will only see the damaging consequences when they are older as it does not appear in teens and children .

Hyperglycemia is a serious condition that diabetics should start to consider when they are maintaining a diabetic diet. Straying from a diabetic diet and eating the wrong foods can cause some very health serious problems that deal with their heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes. Although children and teens can not get this, diabetics need to start monitoring what they eat so they do not get it when they are older.

Cooking Fish like a Professional Chef

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 5:08 pm
by KC Kudra

There are plenty of different ways of cooking fish and it is fun to try different methods. Depending on whether you are using a whole fish, steaks of fillets, you might like to try braising, deep or shallow frying, steaming or even cooking the fish on a wood fish board. Stuffed fish tastes delicious and adds texture. Round fish are the best for stuffing because the body cavity is larger. Most stuffing is made from breadcrumbs, which expand when they cook, so do not use too much. If you are using sea bass, a parsley and walnut pesto makes a great stuffing. If you have fillets, you can sandwich them with stuffing or roll them, then oven-bake them.

Methods of Fish Cooking

Poaching and steaming are healthy, easy ways to cook fish. To poach your fish, you add cream or another thickener, herbs and seasoning. You can use the juice to make a sauce for the fish. For steaming, you place the fish in a steamer over boiling water and put a tight-fitting lid over it.

Oven baking and roasting are suitable for whole fish or fillets. You place the fish in an ovenproof dish and add herbs, seasoning, oil or butter and white wine. If you want very tender flesh, you can cook your fish “en papillote”, which means you put the fish in sealed paper or foil, so it will cook in its own steam. You might like to add lemon or limejuice, fresh herbs and white wine to the fish before sealing the parcel and cooking it. If you would like to braise your fish, you need to put it on top of sauted vegetables in an ovenproof dish, add some white wine and bouillon, and cook for about 20 minutes, with a tight-fitting lid in place.

Grilling is a good way of cooking small whole fish or fillets. If you are using whole fish, slash the skin on both sides a few times and brush with melted butter or olive oil. Baste the fish during cooking and turn it halfway through. You might like to wrap the fish in foil with olive oil, herbs, and lemon juice before placing it on the grill.

You do not have to heat the fish in order to cook it. An example is Ceviche, where white fish (usually snapper) is mixed with limejuice, herbs, and chili. The acidic citrus juice cooks the fish. Scallops, flounder, and sole also suit this cooking method.

Wood Board for Cooking Fish

Most types of wood are suitable for cooking fish, as long as the board is pest-free and untreated. You need to soak the wood before using it. Soak the wood for at least an hour, until it is totally waterlogged. This ensures it is going to give off enough steam to cook the fish.

Cedar is the most common wood but you can also use oak, maple, alder, apple, or cherry. You can buy a cooking quality wood fish board from specialty food stores or online. A wood fish board lasts for one use.

To stop the fish sticking to the board, brush the fish with oil first on one side. You will not need to flip the fish during cooking because it cooks indirectly. Season the fish and place it on the fish board, which you then put on the grill. Make sure you are using a low fire so as not to ignite the board and baste the fish during cooking with anything non-flammable.

Cooking fish on a wood fish board is an excellent way of cooking. The wood smolders, which creates the smoke to flavor your fish. What’s more, there is no washing up to be done afterwards!

How To Grasp Cholesterol Readings On A Diet To Lower Cholesterol

Thursday 7 August 2008 @ 2:55 pm
by Delynda Lardone

Cholesterol is often misunderstood by the majority of people due to lack of knowledge. Generally cholesterol is beneficial because it helps our bodies operate but it can be bad. Learning the difference concerning the bad cholesterol and the good cholesterol will help keep us healthy. So, it’s very important that we learn all about cholesterol readings in regards to our diet to lower cholesterol.

Our good cholesterol is identified as HDL cholesterol which is commonly known as high-density lipoprotein. Its main goal is to make our body parts function properly by taking the cholesterol that we have and flushing it from our system. This keeps our arteries clean and helps us avoid experiencing a heart attack in addition to a stroke.

Then we have the bad cholesterol, which is also know as LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein). This cholesterol is bad, especially when we have large quantities in our bodies. Its main job is to slowly build up in our arteries which eventually clogs them up and can cause us to experience a heart attack and possibly a stroke.

This is why it is extremely important to get cholesterol readings. They typically include three items: a HDL cholesterol reading, a LDL cholesterol reading, and a total cholesterol reading. Most people just look for total cholesterol readings, but you need to keep an eye on all three readings.

When you go to the doctor to find your cholesterol readings, you need to know what the target range is for your cholesterol levels. Your HDL cholesterol analysis should be above the 45 and if it falls lower than 40 bad things can happen. Your LDL cholesterol analysis should be greater than 130 and if it gets above 160, you then should consider starting a diet to lower cholesterol. Results have shown that your total cholesterol should be under 200 and if it gets to 140, then you ought to discuss with your doctor.

To get your cholesterol tested, you should consult your doctor and he will be able to test your cholesterol levels. If you do wind up having a high cholesterol level, then you can change some things in your diet to lower cholesterol which will help in reducing cholesterol before your next visit. Make sure your diet has plenty of protein which you can find in dark meat and fish. Also include 6 servings of fruit and vegetables in your daily means and try to stay away from foods high in fat.

Knowing the difference involving the good and bad cholesterol will help you recognize what the medical doctor is saying when he gives you your cholesterol readings. The outcome will help you and your doctor decide if you should go on some prescription or if you should control your cholesterol through a diet to lower cholesterol.

Six Rewards Of A Wholesome Diabetic Diet

Tuesday 5 August 2008 @ 8:39 pm
by Delynda Lardone

Starting a diet is a great way for anyone to obtain a healthier lifestyle, but for a diabetic it is crucial that they start a diabetic diet as soon as possible. Here are six ways in which diabetics can benefit from a diabetic diet.

The first reward is that it helps the diabetic maintain a normal blood sugar level. This is extremely important because if a diabetic’s blood sugar level gets too high or too low, it can cause irreversible damage to their health.

Another advantage is that it can help reduce the amount of insulin that is needed. Whether you are a type 1 diabetic or a type 2 diabetic, insulin plays an important part in managing the sugar that is placed into your body. You can actually lower how much insulin is used or produced by your body just by eating foods that help stabilize the sugar in your system like good carbohydrates, leans meats, and fiber.

An additional advantage is that a diabetic diet can help you avoid hyperglycemia which is when your blood sugar level gets too low. If you do not have the sugar in your system that your body needs to function, it can cause serious damage to your organs which can lead to coma and death.

One other benefit is that it also helps you avoid having your blood sugar level getting too high which can cause you to become hypoglycemic. This condition is caused by eating way too much of the wrong foods like candy and sweets. If left too high for a long period of time, it can cause great damage to your blood vessels, heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

One more advantage is that you can lose some excess body weight. Many type 2 diabetics develop diabetes because they are simply overweight. Thus, by following a great diabetic diet accompanied with some regular exercise, many type 2 diabetics can help regulate their body’s blood sugar level and eliminate diabetes.

A further reward is that it will boost your metabolism which will ultimately help your body process the foods you eat much better. This can be carried out by simply adding a 15 minute exercise into your daily routine. Exercising speeds up your body’s metabolism and helps provide a healthier body.

There are plenty of rewards to eating a diabetic diet. Everyone, including non-diabetics, can benefit from this diet if they implement it into their lifestyle. It can help you by giving you a normal level of blood sugar, by enabling your body to require less insulin, by making sure that your blood sugar level does not get too high nor too low, by sheding a few extra pounds, and by helping raise your metabolism which helps your body process the foods you eat much better.

Common Food Diabetic People Can Eat

Thursday 31 July 2008 @ 4:25 am
by Max Peykar

The most basic way to treat diabetes is to modify the patient’s daily diet and increase physical activity. The foods diabetic people can eat are varied. Contrary to popular belief, there are many delicious recipes to prepare foods to suit a diabetic’s needs.

While Type I Diabetes is usually diagnosed in children, now we know that it does not affect only them. Type I diabetes, unlike Type II diabetes, is an autoimmune disease. When the beta cells, which produce insulin, in the pancreas, are damaged, the individual suffers from Type I diabetes. When the body becomes resistant to insulin, the patient suffers from Type II diabetes. Both can be combated through proper eating, which includes a varied diet consisting of foods like fat-free, sugar-free and fibrous food items.

Diabetes is, unfortunately, hereditary. However, if you watch what you eat and exercise properly, you can stave off diabetes, even if there are people in your family who have it. Once you do have diabetes, though, you will have to regularly take medicine that regulates the insulin level of your body. One other way to control diabetes that doctors frequently recommend is that you should be careful to eat foods that are highly nutritious and watch your diet.

Just making sure that you eat foods diabetic people can eat is not enough, though - you have to stay active, and do some sort of exercise, whether it is jogging or dancing or walking or swimming, for minimum half an hour every day. The diet is important, though - it should be full of non-fat and unsweetened foods and completely without with sweets, alcohol and high-fat foods, including whole milk products.

Carbs, proteins, vitamins and minerals are essential in the daily diet, and can be acquired through foods diabetic people can eat. Whole grains, oats and wholemeal bread are excellent sources of fibrous carbohydrates, an essential part of a diabetic diet. Proteins are found in fish and lean meat, and in vegetarian options like seeds, nuts and legumes. Fresh fruits and green, leafy vegetables are essential in any diet, as they provide you with the vitamins and the minerals your body needs. Water is also essential - at least eight glasses every day is recommended.

Most recipes for diabetic diet plans are prepared without creams and sauces, because these are often heavily loaded with sugar and fat. Sweet and sour, teriyaki and barbecue sauces are to be avoided at all costs.

Eggs, red meat, mayonnaise, cheese, butter and fizzy drinks are harmful for a diabetic. Among the other foods diabetic people can eat are anything that includes unsaturated fats and prepared in an unsweetened way. There’s no constant or strict diabetic diet, but it’s the diabetic person’s responsibility to eat healthy and keep exercising. By talking to a nutritionist or doctor, a varied and nutritious long-term diet can be followed by replacing existing food items with healthy alternatives.

One common mistake that is made when cooking for special occasions is cooking outside of your comfort zone. When you are preparing a challenging recipe it is best if you do this during a time when you are not going through the stress of potential visitors or insuring the best possible of circumstances. In other words, it is best to challenge your culinary talents when you do not have a vested interest in success.

The Taste of Home Healthy Cooking

Tuesday 29 July 2008 @ 8:25 pm
by Irene Maseko

Healthy cooking is often difficult as most of us do not want to spend time planning and preparing meals that our families refuse to eat. At the same time, we want our families to be healthy so we feel compelled to learn new and improved ways of cooking healthy foods for our family to enjoy (and unfortunately in some cases scorn).

There are many books and magazines that are filled with recipes that encourage healthy cooking and eating habits. If you truly love to cook, then there is no shortage of recipes that you can try out along the way. The really good news is that you can incorporate healthy cooking into your cooking routine whether you are cooking for one or a household of ten.

However, by learning portion control and eating the proper portions you just may discover that you are actually spending less as you adjust to the proper amounts of food you should be consuming in order to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Low Carb Cooking Reviews

Around the world people are paying more attention to their bodies and their health than perhaps at any other time in history. One method that has shown great success in helping people quickly drop those unwanted pounds is through low carb cooking and dieting. This method of weight loss seems to have taken the world by storm promising quick results for the simple (or not so simple) lifestyle change of eliminating as many carbohydrates as possible from our diets.

When it comes to low carb cooking you have the perfect excuse to use your grill well and use your grill often. In fact, I highly recommend a George Foreman grill (or some similar knock off) for your home for those days when grilling outside simply isn’t an option. Around our house, those are the days when the snow reaches the bottom of the grill but we are the exception rather than the rule. Most importantly about low carb cooking you should keep your goal in mind. If you aren’t making progress, check what you are doing and adjust your cooking and eating accordingly.

Gluten Free Cooking

While on the one hand it is frustrating to not have the option of dining out, there is some challenge to finding new and tasty foods and combinations for cooking each and every night without falling into a rut of the same old foods that you know you can eat without worry. Consider cooking gluten free a challenge rather than a chore and you may find that the process is much more enjoyable. You might even find that you appreciate the meals you’ve worked hard to prepare even better because of the great sense of accomplishment.

If you require a gluten free diet and have no idea where to start or what you should be cooking you should check out the many websites and blogs online that address the issues and needs that are faced by those requiring gluten restrictions. You will probably be amazed at the wealth of information that is available. Also, if you have a Trader Joes or Whole Foods store in your area, most of them either offer or will order gluten free products for your cooking needs.

Some Information on the Food to Eat to Lower Cholesterol

Tuesday 29 July 2008 @ 8:19 pm
by Irene Maseko

The high levels of cholesterol in the body are happening more often now than ever before. This is because of the variety of food offered now in the grocery and in restaurants. The person can still recover from this by eating foods that are not high in saturated fats.

Instead of drinking full cream milk or mixing this with cornflakes or whole grain, it is best to use non fat milk instead. The taste is almost the same is much healthier than the regular brand bought in the supermarket.

The healthiest thing to have either for lunch and dinner is food that comes from the ocean. This can be fish or shellfish that is known to carry Omega 3, which is very effective in lowering the levels of cholesterol in people.

In each meal, the person must not forget to add some fruits in the plate. A salad works best or having a few carrots or potatoes as a side dish. There must always be a balance whenever the individual decides to have meat or fish.

Exercising is the Best Way to Lower Cholesterol

Cholesterol is something that is in every human being. This is just one of the many things that are produced by the person in order to function properly.

Those who have not exercised before should first consult with a physician to find out which is safe. Those who have a heart condition may not do something rigorous and will have to rely on something that is low impact such as walking, weight lifting or stretching.

With constant exercise, after a week or two, there will be improvements in the levels of good and bad cholesterol in the body as well as reduction in the current weight of the person.

If the individual does not have time to enroll in a gym, there are other ways to pump those muscles and increase the heart rate. For starters, men and women can go brisk walking early in the morning or before going to work.

Natural Ways to Reduce Cholesterol

Cholesterol is just one of substances that the body can make on its own. Unfortunately, eating food that is high in oil and saturated fats creates an imbalance. If precautions are not taken now, the chances of a heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases get higher as the person ages.

Studies have shown that getting those muscles to work is much better and safer than taking prescription drugs that are known to have certain side effects when it is taken. The same goes for the use of food supplements since the human body needs exercise to keep in functioning.

There was a time that doctors encourage children and adults to drink milk. Though this can help strengthen the bones as one ages, this too is has certain ingredients that are not safe. This should be changed for soy or non-fat milk that may taste a little different but is much healthier than the old one.

Unsweetened tea is also safe to drink. It may taste different so mixing a sachet of Equal or NutraSweet can add some flavoring.
